A police operation launched last night as part of the investigation into last week's theft at the Louvre has led to the arrest of two people. According to information from Le Parisien, they were part of the four-person gang that stole nine precious jewels from the Apollo Gallery using a freight elevator.
According to information released by the Parisian newspaper, the two men arrested are originally from Seine-Saint-Denis, the northern suburbs of Paris.
The operation was launched suddenly, after investigators, who had been monitoring the two individuals for days, realized that one of them was about to flee abroad, apparently to Algeria. They followed him and arrested him at Paris's Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport.
Immediately afterward, the accomplice was arrested, again in the Paris region. They are two criminals, known to the police for thefts.
They are thought to be experienced thieves, typically performing robberies on commission. The two arrested individuals have been transferred to the Anti-Crime Brigade headquarters, where they may be held for up to 96 hours.
The investigation continues to identify the other accomplices and the organization that launched the operation for a spectacular heist that had worldwide resonance.
