A long applause greeted the election of the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which took place with 395 votes. 63 years old, he succeeds Angela Merkel, who was equally acclaimed by the deputies present at the Bundestag in Berlin.

The Social Democrat needed a minimum of 369 preferences: 707 votes but three were invalid.

Among the messages sent to Merkel to greet her after years of honorable career, the one on Twitter by the French president Emmanuel Macron: “Merci, chère Angela”, he also wrote in German. “Thank you for never forgetting the lessons of history, for having done so much for us, with us, to make Europe progress”.
