A White House official wanted to clarify that no health reasons played any role in this decision.
Among the various statements that arrived shortly after the announcement there was also that of Robert F. Kennedy Jr: "I am the only candidate who can beat Donald Trump."
Meanwhile, Biden has already officially supported Kamala Harris, paving the way for the choice of a new vice president. The shortlist includes at least six names, from Michigan governor Gretchen to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
ROY COOPER - The governor of North Carolina is a moderate who has been able to navigate the state's complicated political system and impose himself. Cooper won many bipartisan victories, including working with Republicans to expand Medicaid, health care for the poor.
JOSH SHAPIRO - The governor of Pennsylvania won in 2022, and has long been thought to become America's first Jewish president. At 51, he is relatively young and could serve to highlight Donald Trump's advanced age. He has never held high-profile roles in government, but with Trump choosing JD Vance this is a detail that may be of little interest.
GRETCHEN WHITMER - In her second term as governor of Michigan, Whitmer is very popular in the Midwest and has never hidden her political ambitions. She confessed to the New York Times that in 2028 she would like to see a Generation X president in the White House, without however explicitly suggesting that it could be her. During the pandemic she hit the headlines as one of Donald Trump's enemies for his strict anti-Covid measures, which made her the subject of an attempted kidnapping by a far-right armed group that wanted to try her for her anti-virus crackdown.
MARK KELLY - The Arizona senator and former astronaut is the husband of former congresswoman Gabby Gifford, who promoted gun controls after barely surviving a shooting in 2011 in which six people were killed. A moderate, he has sometimes voted against Biden, especially on immigration.
ANDY BESHEAR - The governor of Kentucky won two terms in one of the most Republican states in America, with a campaign based on the defense of abortion rights. Unlike the other top candidates, however, he comes from an irrelevant state in the electoral strategy of the Democrats.
PETE BUTTIGIEG - The face of the Biden administration for transportation, the secretary is considered one of the government's most skilled communicators. His political ambitions are well known given his candidacy for the White House in 2020.
