Thirty people were killed in northeastern Nigeria in an attack by jihadists in retaliation for an army raid, two militia leaders said last night.
The attack was carried out on Saturday in the village of Mudu, in the state of Borno, near the border with Chad, by the jihadists of the organization of the Islamic State in West Africa (Iswap). It only became known yesterday due to the poor quality of the telecommunications network, with the jihadists having destroyed several repeaters in the region.
The 30 victims are " scrap metal workers who were in the area looking for burnt vehicles, numerous in the villages of northern Borno as a result of the terrorist attacks," police said.
The men killed in the attack had come on foot from the IDP camps in the city of Rann, 80 km away. Iswap accused the scrap dealers of having informed the army of their positions in the region.
In recent weeks, the Nigerian army has successfully carried out land and air raids against Iswap and rival Boko Haram fighters, killing several jihadist commanders.
