King Harald V of Norway has died, the Norwegian royal house announced. The sovereign passed away at 6:35 this morning at the age of 89.
Europe's oldest monarch was admitted to the Rikshospitalet, the national hospital in Oslo, on August 17th for a blood disorder following a regular checkup. The condition then deteriorated due to a bacterial infection in the blood. Prince Haakon, 53, and his wife, Mette-Marit, will be the new rulers in Oslo. Already yesterday, before the official announcement a few minutes ago, many in Oslo had gathered at the royal palace to lay flowers.
The monarch suffered from hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that causes the abnormally rapid destruction of red blood cells. Along with his wife, Queen Sonja, the royal couple had planned to visit several municipalities around Norway this autumn.
Despite his age, with the aid of a cane, the King of Norway had managed to fulfill many of his official duties, including meeting the national football team upon his return to his homeland after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
