Iran has carried out the death sentence for two people found guilty of insulting Islam . This was announced by the online site of the Iranian judiciary Mizan, according to which Sadrollah Fazeli Zarei and Youssef Mehrdad , convicted of having " insulted the prophet Mohammed and burned the Koran ", were hanged in the morning.

One of the accused, in March 2021, had confessed to having published insults to Islam on his social media accounts, adds the website of the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic.

The two had been charged with "Sabulnabi" (insulting the prophet) for posting messages on social media deemed insulting against Islam, the Prophet Muhammad, Muhammad's mother and Shiite imams as well as videos depicting the burning of the Koran .

According to the Irna agency, Mehrdad was arrested in March 2021 on charges of founding and leading 15 groups that promoted "sacrilege and blasphemy" on social media and also Fazeli Zareh, arrested in Yasouj also in March 2021, he was accused of founding 20 social media groups involved in online sacrilege.

The two cooperated closely and created the social media accounts using an Iranian telephone number and a French number. Some Shiite preachers in Iran had issued a fatwa against them for blasphemy which is punishable by the death penalty in the Islamic Republic .
