Daren Acemoglu and Simon Johnson, professors at MIT in Boston, and James A. Robinson, of the University of Chicago, are the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics.

The announcement was made by the Swedish Academy, which wanted to award the three the honor for their studies on "how institutions are formed and influence prosperity", since "reducing the enormous differences in income between countries is one of the greatest challenges of our time".

"The laureates," stressed Jakob Svensson, who chairs the Nobel Committee for Economic Sciences, "have demonstrated the importance of social institutions to achieve this goal."
