Texas and Tennessee prepare to carry out the sentences of their oldest inmates on death row.

The news is reported by the American media. These are Carl Buntion, 78, convicted of the murder of a policeman in 1990, and Oscar Franklin Smith, 72, who killed his wife and two teenage children in 1989.

Both will be executed by lethal injection. Buntion's lawyers, in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day for 20 years, have filed a final appeal with the Supreme Court. The man, we read, "is frail, elderly and no longer represents a threat to anyone".
