Horror in Herat, a city in western Afghanistan.

The Taliban hanged a body from a crane in the city's main square, a witness reported to the Associated Press. A story unfortunately supported by photos and videos that run on the web.

According to Wazir Ahmad Seddiqi, who runs a pharmacy in that square, the Taliban brought the bodies of four people there, captured during an attempted kidnapping and killed by the police (it is not clear whether in a firefight or in a actual execution). One was hanged there, hanging from a crane, the other three were moved to other cities to undergo the same treatment.

So far the Taliban have not made any comments, but yesterday Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, one of the movement's founders and main executor of the harsh interpretation of Islamic law, said Koranic students would reinstate executions or amputations to punish certain crimes.

"Everyone criticized us for the punishments at the stadium, but we never said anything about their laws and their punishments," he said. "Nobody will tell us what our laws should be. We will follow Islam and make our laws according to the Koran ".
