Thousands of tents are flooded and families are forced to abandon what remains of their few possessions , swept away by the water. This is the situation facing many people in the Gaza Strip , where heavy rains since yesterday are worsening already extremely difficult living conditions. This is what the Palestinian news agency Wafa reports.
The Israeli offensive has completely or partially destroyed 92% of residential buildings in the Strip , forcing most residents to seek shelter in tents that offer no protection from the summer heat or winter cold, or to live in their damaged homes, despite the risk of collapse due to flooding and rain. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed concern that "thousands of displaced families are now completely exposed to adverse weather conditions, heightening health and safety concerns."
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that partners providing shelter support have deployed rapid response teams and have been working for weeks to mitigate the impact of the forecast rains on Gaza's population. OCHA reported that approximately 1,000 tents have been distributed to families in Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis, and that approximately 7,000 blankets have been provided to more than 1,800 families, approximately 15,000 tarpaulins to more than 3,700 families, and winter clothing to more than 500 families.
