The pension reform in France becomes law. Unless motions of censure are presented within 24 hours and, debated on Monday, do not garner a majority of votes.

In this case the government would fall, as would the law in which it placed its trust. Marine Le Pen took care of announcing her own motion.

For his part, President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in the Council of Ministers, declared: "We cannot play with the future of the country", thus justifying recourse to the contested article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows for the vote of the National Assembly, to adopt the pension reform.

"My political interest would have been to go to the vote - he added - but the financial and economic risks are too great".

Macron then addressed Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and the ministers, underlining: «Among all of you, I'm not the one who risks my job or seat. But I believe that as things stand, the financial and economic risks are too great. Therefore, I authorize you to use 49.3».
