After Israel, also in Brazil there are six cases of "flurona" , or the simultaneous infection of influenza and Covid (the name flurona is indeed a mix between the word flu - influenza in

English - and coronavirus).

Two of these patients are hospitalized in Rio, one is a 16-year-old young man. According to the mother, the boy in question is an "athlete who had already been vaccinated against coronavirus and flu". His condition, however, would not be worrying.

São Paulo, the most populous state in the country, has instead registered at least one case of flurona: it is a journalist, Giulia Fernandez, who tested positive on 20 December.

"I had very difficult days, I was in bed for four days when I couldn't get up, and from there I started to improve little by little," she said herself.

Finally, three other patients were registered in Fortaleza, the capital of Cearà: they are two one-year-old children, who have already been discharged, and a 52-year-old man, hospitalized and in isolation.

Experts are trying to investigate how the infection develops, which presents anomalies from a clinical point of view. "The infection of Covid and flu together is a bit strange because in medicine it has always been said that if there is a virus that gives one disease it prevents the development of another due to a different virus", underlined Roberto Cauda , infectious disease specialist at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome and scientific advisor of the EMA.

“The explanation - said Cauda - could lie in the fact that Covid causes a defect

production of interferon and this would open the way to the other virus, which in this case is the flu "." The cases that are being encountered - concludes the expert - lead us to say even more vaccinate against the flu " .
