The alert remains very high in the Greek islands due to the fires: after Rhodes ( VIDEO ), it is now the turn of Corfu.

A vast fire broke out yesterday afternoon with several outbreaks in the Perithia area north of the island in the Ionian Sea, with the authorities ordering the evacuation of as many as 17 villages, while the Coast Guard rescued 59 people who were on Nisaki beach.

Large deployment of firefighters, also at work at night to contain the blaze and keep it away from homes.

In total, local sources report, 2,500 people have been evacuated in the last few hours , which add up to thousands more, residents and tourists removed from Rhodes and other Greek islands devastated by the fires.
