At the end of a tense negotiation, the European Parliament has given the green light to the nomination of Raffaele Fitto as Executive Vice-President of the Commission with responsibility for Cohesion.

The case of the vice-presidency of the former Spanish minister Teresa Ribera, who was also nominated but with reservations, was also resolved in extremis: Ribera has in fact committed to resigning in the event of formal accusations for the flooding in Valencia.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was pleased with Fitto's appointment: "This important role assigned to the Commissioner designated by Italy is a victory for all Italians, not for the Government or a political force," she said, and demonstrates "a newfound centrality of Italy in the European context."

Fitto and Ribera are scheduled to take office on December 1st.
