"I have done nothing more than the others." This is the phrase she always repeated, even to Pope Francis during their meetings. Today Cabras lost Sister Maria Concetta Esu, 90 years old, for a missionary life in her beloved Africa where as a midwife she delivered more than 40 thousand children .
Indicated in 2019 by Bergoglio as a model for all missionaries in the world , Sister Maria Concetta, originally from Villasor, was a symbol of strength and generosity for Cabras . After spending a period in Sardinia for treatment, given her precarious health conditions, in July 2023 she decided to leave again, she wanted to die among her people, among the many poor people she helped during her sixty years on a mission .
But first she had said goodbye to Cabras, a town to which she was very attached: her brother Don Giulio Esu was the parish priest of the church of the Sacred Heart for 40 years . And he still lives here. A big party had been organized for Sister Maria Concetta. Her brother had celebrated mass in her honor. "I decided to leave for Africa because that's where I spent my life helping others," said Sister Maria Concetta Esu, daughter of San Giuseppe di Genoni. " When the Lord decides to call me, I want to be there, among my people ."
A decision also shared by Pope Francis. "During our last meeting - said Sister Maria Concetta Esu - he himself told me to return immediately to Africa where there is still so much need of me". And so it was.
