The passing of the scepter and crown, shown live on national TV, was attended by over one hundred thousand people.
The 83-year-old monarch signed her declaration of abdication at the Council of State at Christiansborg Palace, with her 55-year-old son sitting to her right. Also present was the new sovereign's wife, Mary Donaldson, honored by someone in the crowd with a kangaroo-shaped puppet, because - curiosity - she was born in Australia, in Hobart, Tasmania.
