Covid, China's forecasts: "65 million cases a week at the end of June"

China is preparing to face a new wave of Covid-19 which will reach its peak in late June, with 65 million cases a week.

This was stated by Zhong Nanshan, China's top expert on respiratory diseases, during a scientific forum in Guangzhou. The scientist also added that two new vaccines to counter the Xbb variant will soon be on the market and three or four more will be approved soon. “We are ahead of other countries in developing more effective vaccines,” he says.

According to projections, a peak of Covid-19 infections in China is likely as early as the end of May , with around 40 million infections per week. Then, in fact, it will reach 65 million by the end of June.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), the infection rate of the Xbb variant rose from 0.2% in mid-February to 74.4% in late April and then to 83.6% of early May .
