Yvan Colonna, the Corsican independence activist sentenced to life imprisonment, who was seriously injured on March 2 in an attack on the Arles prison at the hands of an Islamic fundamentalist prisoner who attempted to strangle him, died.

The announcement is made by his family's lawyer.

The story of Colonna is at the basis of the rekindling of violence in Corsica in the last two weeks and the French government has come to announce an opening towards the island's autonomy.

The 61-year-old activist and militant had been listed as the perpetrator of the murder of prefect Claude Érignac on 6 February 1998 in Ajaccio.
