The name it bears we only know is that of a fairy, but unfortunately her life was certainly not a fairy tale. At least until now, and with the hope that the future may hold a happy ending.

We are talking about a one-year-old girl, the daughter of an Italian couple, born in Ukraine with surrogacy techniques. Abandoned by her parents, she returned to Italy yesterday ready to be entrusted to a new family, and thanks to the interest of the International Police Cooperation Service (SCIP).

THE FACTS - According to the reconstruction provided by the Police, the Italian parents had gone to Ukraine in August 2020 - in one of the brackets granted by Covid for air travel - to fulfill their desire to have a child through a surrogate mother. After the recognition of the child, the couple returned to Italy, however, entrusting the child to a babysitter found on site through an interim agency. On reaching the minor's first year of life, having no more news from her parents and having no longer received the agreed fee also for the child's support, the babysitter turned to the Italian consulate to report what had happened. The story then bounced back to the Public Prosecutor's Office with territorial jurisdiction in Italy and the Prosecutor's Office for the Minors, who ascertained the parents' real intention of not wanting to take the child back.

THE QUESTIONS - And here a series of questions arise: why have the parents given up on the baby? Why could they no longer keep it or did it need special care? Why did they change their minds upon returning home? And above all, is it possible to change your mind when it comes to children?

The SCIP, in charge of the repatriation of the little girl and in close contact with the Italian Consulate in Kiev called to issue the necessary documents for the trip, then brought the little fairy back to Italy. Alongside her, on the journey from Kiev to Malpensa, her favorite soft toys, delivered upon departure by the babysitter who has been her mother until today, and the unwitting hope of a better future than the fate has reserved for them.
