Tug-of-war between Rome and Berlin on NGO ships operating in the Mediterranean to rescue migrants.
At the center of the conflict is the German government's plan to finance the (German) organizations involved in the rescues.
At least three NGOs have already received funding from Germany: the latest is Sea Eye, based in Regensburg, which will receive 365 thousand euros from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 2023 for its search and rescue activities.
«We are very happy with this result, which will allow us to finance two more rescue missions of the Sea Eye 4 this year», commented Jutta Wieding, a representative of the NGO.
The Meloni government, however, is not happy: "We want to make an agreement for a new pact: NGOs flying the German flag or those of another country collect migrants and take them to their countries and not to Italy," said the minister. of Tajani Foreign Affairs, commenting on Berlin's decision.
Previously the executive led by Giorgia Meloni had expressed "surprise" at Germany's choice.
Speaking of the controversy, the Prime Minister commented: "You cannot show solidarity with other people's borders."
