Queen Elizabeth II is no longer the head of state of Barbados. The Caribbean country proclaimed itself a republic during a ceremony that took place in the presence of Prince Charles: the British royal banner was withdrawn and Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as the first president of the island of 287,000 inhabitants. His election, by direct universal suffrage, took place in October.

A desire for independence that puts centuries of submission to the British crown in the past.
