Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg confirmed the lockdown for the unvaccinated at the national level, after the announcement of Upper Austria to take this measure to break the contagion curve.

The unvaccinated will only be able to leave the house for work, for essential purchases and to "take a walk", as explained by Schallenberg. There will be random checks.

"We don't live in a police state, we can't and want to check every street corner," he commented. There will also be an obligation to vaccinate health professionals.

"I don't understand why two thirds of the population should limit their freedoms just because a third hesitates" to get vaccinated, added the chancellor. "This Christmas will be uncomfortable for the unvaccinated," he added.

Austria has been experiencing a real boom in new cases in recent days, with the most serious situation in Upper Austria, where the incidence has reached 1,192 infected for every hundred thousand inhabitants in the last seven days.

In the last few hours, the country has been included by Germany among those with the highest Covid risk.

To date, about 65% of the population in the country has a vaccination certificate.
