Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported detecting 45 planes and six Chinese naval vessels around the island in 24 hours at 6am local time, with a surge in activity five days before the president-elect's inauguration ceremony. William Lai.

A total of 26 planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or reached the air defense identification zone to the north and southwest, a statement said.

The island's armed forces - the authorities specify - "monitored the situation and responded accordingly".

This is the highest number of Chinese aircraft detected in 24 hours around the island claimed by Beijing since the beginning of 2024.

In recent years, the People's Republic has increased military "pressure" on the island, sending planes and warships almost every day. According to experts, the constant presence of Chinese ships and aircraft near Taiwan is part of a defined strategy " from a gray zone”, based on acts and provocations that stop just before erupting into open conflict.
