After eating muffins believed to contain cannabis, 90 children have been hospitalized in South Africa.

According to local officials, pupils attending primary schools in Pulamadibogo, north-west of Pretoria, purchased the sweets from street vendors as they walked along the road to class.

After ingesting them, they immediately felt nausea, stomach pain and were all sent to nearby medical facilities. “Approximately 87” have been discharged, the Education Department said in a statement, “only three female students remain in hospital and are still receiving the medical care needed to return to health.”

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They are two boys, aged between 21 and 19, who will appear today before the Soshanguve magistrate's court, as reported by the police, who are also carrying out a toxicology report to confirm that it was cannabis.
