A few words, with a faint voice and everything stops. "I killed my wife, come." It is dawn when Giorgio Meneghel, a 53-year-old farmer, calls the carabinieri from his house in via Roma. Immediately the precise story of that violent attack while Daniela Cadeddu was still asleep: two, perhaps three hammer blows, to the head and from that sleep she never woke up. Meneghel confessed and assumed all responsibility, now he is in the Massama prison on the highly thoughtful charge of voluntary murder. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor of Oristano has ordered an autopsy on the body of the 51-year-old originally from Cabras.

The alarm

There are five minutes to 7 when the call to 112 arrives. Giorgio Meneghel reports himself and in a few minutes the police patrols of the station and of the provincial command are in front of the house with pink walls, which overlooks the main street of the town. A very quick intervention, with the fear that the man could make some extreme gesture. When the carabinieri arrive, Meneghel is there waiting, immediately trying to tell what happened and to explain why. Daniela is motionless on the bed, marked by a blind violence that has left no way out. Not even the time to scream and ask for help, everything happened in a few moments and, according to initial findings, it would have been an immediate end.

The investigation

The carabinieri arrived on the spot, then the soldiers of the Ris of Cagliari for the scientific investigations. Immediately after the coroner Roberto Demontis and the prosecutor on duty Sara Ghiani, who coordinates the investigations. The surveys went on for hours, the carabinieri searched the house, where the two had been living separately under the same roof for some time. Also check the woman's car parked in the garage opposite, nothing was left out even if the picture of the tragedy was immediately clear. It all happened in the bedroom, where the victim slept. It was still dark outside, Giorgio Meneghel entered and hit her. Once, twice, three times. Then silence, a few minutes and the call to the carabinieri. The hammer was found in the house and was seized by the military, as were the bloodstained clothing.

The interrogation

While the soldiers were completing their checks in Zeddiani, Meneghel was accompanied to the provincial command barracks in Oristano. A long interrogation, assisted by his lawyer Irene Gana, in which he assumed all the responsibilities. According to what emerged during the long face to face with the investigators, he said he had arrived at this gesture in order not to make his partner suffer for over thirty years "whom he loved more than anything else". Then the reference to the health problems of Daniela Cadeddu (only two months ago she had undergone a delicate surgery) and to her own, to the economic difficulties with debts that in recent times would have exacerbated an already complicated and rather particular family situation. The two, in fact, had been separated for some time but continued to live in the same house even if in distinct and communicating areas. And reports were reportedly always going to be good. No quarrels, no episodes of violence or mistreatment until dawn yesterday when something must have snapped in Meneghel's mind. On all these elements now the carabinieri and the prosecutor will have to work to reconstruct in detail the tragedy that upset the small town a few kilometers from Oristano. In the next few days, in the meantime, Meneghel will appear before the investigating judge for the hearing to validate the arrest.
