The driver who hit and killed the 23-year-old Tunisian man, Oussama Mahjoub, late on Tuesday evening , while he was walking on the edge of the state road 200, between the towns of Marritza and Tonnara, in Sorso , tested positive for drug use.

The Carabinieri of the local station, with the support of their colleagues from the Radiomobile of the Porto Torres Company, arrested in flagrante delicto the driver , Francesco Acca, 43 years old from Santa Maria Coghinas, held responsible for the crimes of failure to provide assistance and vehicular homicide.

The accident occurred around 10:30 PM when the car, traveling at high speed and likely due to poor lighting, struck the young Tunisian man who was walking on the side of the road, killing him instantly. In addition to the military, 118 paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately understood the seriousness of the situation. After attempting to resuscitate the boy, they were forced to give up.

The victim had just gotten off a bus and was returning to his home at the Marritza reception center when he was struck and thrown into the ditch. The driver, failing to provide immediate assistance, later reported to the Valledoria Carabinieri station, where he tested positive for drug use.

By order of the Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office, which is coordinating and leading the investigation, the body was transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Sassari Hospital for an autopsy. The driver was placed under house arrest pending a sentencing hearing, scheduled for this morning in Sassari Court.
