West Nile Virus has arrived in Serramanna. Confirmation came from the Municipality, which, after finding a positive bird in the countryside a few kilometers from the town, immediately put prevention measures into action.
And then he issued an urgent warning to citizens: no need to be alarmist, but to be extremely vigilant and behave responsibly.
"The fight starts in homes, gardens, and backyards. It doesn't take much to stop mosquitoes—the main vectors of the virus—but everyone's cooperation is needed," the statement reads. "The risk is real and especially affects vulnerable people: the virus, in many cases, doesn't cause obvious symptoms, but it can become dangerous for the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with pre-existing conditions."
Among the most important tips: eliminate any standing water, empty saucers, buckets, bins, and containers of all kinds. Even a simple watering can left on the terrace can become a perfect breeding ground for larvae. In cemeteries, where it's difficult to remove water from flowerpots, the City Council recommends using sand or copper wire. Those with decorative basins or ponds in their gardens are encouraged to introduce larvivorous fish—even goldfish are fine—or to regularly treat the water with specific products.
The watchword is prevention, but with an important caveat: it's not just the responsibility of local governments or healthcare providers. The front is everywhere: in private manholes, in clogged gutters, in tires abandoned in a yard. Every corner can become a small incubator.
The Municipality has also urged documenting any larvicidal treatments with receipts or certifications, especially if using specialized companies. Inspections may be necessary, and compliance with the guidelines is essential to limit the spread.
