A new case of West Nile virus has been reported in Oristano. A sixty-five-year-old man has tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus, as revealed by screening of blood donors conducted by the San Martino Blood Transfusion Center. The man is asymptomatic, but the collected blood bag was immediately discarded and the Hygiene Department has initiated the required protocols.

This is the second positive case detected in the city in a few days, following the case of a seventy-two-year-old man with underlying health conditions who remains hospitalized at San Martino Hospital. His condition is stable . Meanwhile, the Province has called an urgent meeting for Monday at 9:30 a.m. to discuss issues related to West Nile fever.

"We have no evidence of any new symptomatic cases," clarifies Maddalena Satta, health director of the Oristano Local Health Authority. "The positive result in a donor demonstrates that the procedure for ensuring blood safety is working effectively and that all measures required to prevent West Nile virus have been properly implemented. It is important to protect oneself from mosquito bites, which carry the virus, but we must avoid alarmism ."
