There will be no more dangerous falls due to uneven sidewalks, and this is making Cagliari residents rejoice. There are some more doubts about parking, which have been clarified, however . Opinion is divided on the tree issue.
The Municipal Board, led by Massimo Zedda, met with residents this afternoon at the University of Cagliari's Engineering Faculty to present the redevelopment project for Viale Merello , which will begin in autumn 2026.
Sidewalks with draining materials, parking spaces among the trees, raised crossings, planted flowerbeds, and a new public lighting system. These are some of the main projects that will be part of the avenue's redevelopment, financed with PN Metro Plus and Città Media del Sud 2021-2027 funds, for a total of €10 million. The work is scheduled for completion in 2028.
In front of more than a hundred people, Mayor Zedda outlined the key points of the restyling and addressed the concerns and opinions of those present. The reception was mixed: a plan to rehabilitate the dilapidated road and pedestrian corridor is definitely welcome, but the issue of parking spaces was a hot topic: "Will you take away our parking?" The mayor repeatedly reassured concerned residents that once the work is completed, the parking space availability will remain unchanged .
There's also controversy over the trees: many have complained about the excessive shade cast on the homes on Viale Merello, where the lower floors must have lights on even during the day . Some believe the project should include a rethink on the Ficus trees. "We will ensure appropriate pruning," Zedda responded. "There's no point in talking about what can't be done."
