Two poachers were surprised by the agents of the Molentargius station of the Forestry Corps while they were stalking the mullets along the Terramaini canal using a scale, the square net that is lowered to the bottom and controlled directly from the ground before being hoisted loaded with prey.
The two poachers, both from Sant'Elia, were fined. Everyone will have to pay a fine of one thousand euros. The mullets, still alive, weighing a total of 40 kilos, were immediately released into the water.
The poachers avoided a criminal charge because they were located just outside the park boundaries. The fishermen justified their presence in Terramaini with the fact that the fish were not to be placed on the market but used as live bait for amberjack and bluefish. A justification that did not convince the agents, given the quantity of the catch.
In the coming days, a reclamation campaign will be launched to recover nets and pots placed in the canals by poachers.
