Dramatic situation in Gallura due to the total inadequacy of the staff of the Mental Health Center of the Giovanni Paolo II hospital. A small number of specialists face insurmountable difficulties every day, psychiatrists can barely deal with emergencies.
We are talking about few units in service, for psychiatric patients and their families it is a daily drama. Inmates with addiction problems or mental illnesses cannot ask for alternative measures to prison because the ASL psychiatrists cannot follow them and prepare therapeutic paths. The inability of specialists to respond to all requests is unfortunately a fact that affects patients and families.
The municipal councilor for Social Services of Olbia, Simonetta Lai, explains: «The ASL psychiatrists are tried and tested, the small number of specialists does not allow an adequate response to the demand for services. The patients' families are desperate, they turn to the Municipality for services that we cannot guarantee, even for the administration of drugs. There are documents that the CSM has difficulty releasing due to the lack of medical personnel. Patients need documents to obtain benefits and social inclusion support. Without it you stay out. And there are also problems with applications to the Medical Commission. The patients' families are exhausted."
