The source of the fire at Punta Molentis has been found, and it was set intentionally: the Prosecutor's Office carries out an inspection.
Magistrates and forestry officials are working on the ground to identify those responsible for the devastation. They're also searching for a suspicious car. Meanwhile, a hypothesis has emerged as to the cause of the Villacidro fire: a collapsed power line.Video di Francesco Pinna
The investigation into Sunday's devastating fire at Punta Molentis, in Villasimius, has revealed one thing: it was intentional. Investigators have identified a source of the fire, and investigations are ongoing into another. And there's no longer any doubt: someone started the fire that destroyed the environment of one of Villasimius's gems, incinerated dozens of cars, and forced over 200 swimmers to flee—including by sea, on Coast Guard patrol boats. A near-miss.
This is certain, although due to confidentiality, investigators were unable to confirm it during the inspection carried out this afternoon.
Among the remains of the charred Mediterranean scrub and the carcasses of the vehicles were the chief prosecutor of Cagliari, Rodolfo Sabelli, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Andrea Vacca, the commander of the Forestry Corps Gianluca Cocco and the Carabinieri.
The inspection was also carried out to express gratitude "to the Forestry Corps, the firefighters, the Coast Guard, and all the law enforcement agencies who worked in the area, because it's also thanks to them that there were no casualties," Sabelli explained to the microphones. Of course, the prosecutor continued, "we will investigate the fires. We also need to get an idea on the spot. That's also why we're here."
The investigation is now based on two elements: the homemade trigger, and a suspicious car, which was seen in the area shortly before all hell broke loose.
After their investigations in Villasimius, investigators headed to Villacidro: here too, over the weekend, fires repeatedly burned several hectares. But according to leaks, the cause was negligent: there was no intent to destroy. The theory is that the cause was a collapsed power line.
