The theme of the end of life is one of those that shakes consciences, a reflection that every person, sooner or later, finds himself having to face. In the Memorial 2024 dedicated to Salvatore Usala , we will discuss precisely this: the right to choose and know , the self-determination of each of us in the face of the end of our existence.

On Saturday, October 26, at the Lazzaretto di Sant'Elia , experts, family members and operators will meet to talk about dignity and freedom. Beppino Englaro, whose personal story has opened a rift in the silence on the subject of the end of life, will bring his experience and his voice, together with professionals who accompany terminally ill patients and their families every day.

The conference will open with greetings from the mayor of Cagliari, Massimo Zedda, and the president of the association Viva la vita Sardegna OdV, Michele Riontino. The debate will be moderated by Sonia Argiolas, while the interventions of doctors such as Paolo Castaldi and Giuseppe Obinu and legal experts such as Roberta Ruta, will offer a concrete and conscious look at a topic that concerns everyone, in every phase of life.

But it won't just be about rules and procedures: there will also be space for the most intimate and profound reflection, the one that looks at suffering with eyes full of humanity, thanks to the intervention of the psychologist Franca Tarantini and the priest Don Ettore Cannavera.

The conference is also an opportunity to go beyond words and technicalities, to restore dignity to the concept of end of life, to remember, as Salvatore Usala would have wanted, that the freedom to choose is a right that must be respected until the last breath.
