The Regional Council has approved the doubling of the Monserrato-Settimo San Pietro railway line. Upon a proposal from Transport Councillor Barbara Manca, the executive has approved the guidelines for the project's construction.
The project, worth a total of €18 million, will see ARST as the implementing entity and contracting authority. This will allow for the dedication of a specific infrastructure for the Cagliari light rail line, which currently operates on tracks shared with the Monserrato-Mandas-Isili rail line.
"This is an investment that looks to the future of mobility in the Cagliari area," stated the Transport Councilor. "The doubling of the Monserrato–Settimo San Pietro line will significantly enhance metropolitan service, reducing travel and waiting times, improving travel comfort and intermodality. This latter aspect is of fundamental importance for improving service efficiency. It is a concrete step forward toward a more sustainable transport system that meets citizens' mobility needs."
The doubling of the Monserrato–Settimo section will reduce travel times, increase frequencies, and strengthen the Monserrato and Settimo San Pietro stations as intermodal hubs for rail, road, and car. This represents a fundamental step in the reorganization of the local public transport system, consistent with the guidelines of the Regional Transport Plan and the objectives of the 2025–2027 Regional Development Program.
The Regional Council has mandated the Directorate General of Transport to sign the agreement and take care of the administrative and accounting requirements necessary to ensure the start of the works by the established deadline of December 31, 2026.
