A place to remember the Cagliari women workers who were protagonists of the "bread riots" of 1906. The space between Viale Regina Margherita and Piazza Ingrao will have a name: "Iscalitas – scalette delle cigarraie" (cigarette makers' steps).
The Cagliari city council decided to honor the female workers of the Manifattura Tabacchi (Tobacco Factory). They were among the protagonists of the revolt that arose following the rise in bread prices, in an already tense social and economic situation. It was the spark that ignited a discontent already aggravated by poverty and limited access to food.
"This year," the resolution reads, "marks the anniversary of the Bread Riots, a protest that began in May 1906 and was significant in both local and national history. The workers of the tobacco factory on Viale Regina Margherita, known as cigar makers, were among the main protagonists of these uprisings, whose protests highlighted women's leadership in social struggles and the direct link between work, subsistence, and dignity."
