In Sardinia, there are 608 vehicles per thousand inhabitants, and every year, the island's roads are used by an average of almost 1.2 million vehicles, an increase compared to the past.

These are the numbers contained in the latest Istat report “The mileage of circulating road vehicles” , which lists the data for the year 2023 compared with the year 2021, taking one of the most recent statistical snapshots of motor vehicle journeys in the various regions of Italy.

Looking at the island, as mentioned, in three years the average annual circulating vehicle count has gone from 1,156,557 to 1,193,242 . Of these, the majority are cars and passenger vehicles (957,498). The number of motorcycles has also increased, from 83,177 to 92,883.

The most “travelled” province is that of Sassari (290 thousand), ahead of Cagliari (261 thousand), South Sardinia (187 thousand), Nuoro (127 thousand) and Oristano (90 thousand).

Furthermore, Istat reports, in Sardinia each passenger vehicle travels an average of 10,523 kilometers (in 2021 it was 10,007 km).

Istat data also shows that the motorization rate on the island is higher than the national average, that is, the number of motor vehicles in circulation per thousand inhabitants: 608 versus 594 .

However, the “vehicle density” , that is, the number of motor vehicles circulating per square kilometre, is much lower than the national average: in Italy there are 116, on the island 39.6.

According to the Istat report, in 2023, there were an estimated 44.3 million vehicles in circulation in Italy, equal to 82.2% of the entire vehicle fleet, which together traveled nearly 471.6 billion vehicle-kilometers on Italian roads and/or abroad.

Furthermore, compared to 2021, the average annual fleet in circulation increased by 2.6% (+1.1 million vehicles) and total mileage increased by 10% between 2023 and 2021, with a significant increase in heavy commercial vehicles (+18.1%) and buses (+18.1%), while total mileage for passenger vehicles increased by 9.7%.
