Surprise on the start day of the 2024 Cagliari Carnival: there will not be the traditional appointment with the burning of King Cancioffali.

The usual event of Mardi Gras is canceled this year, as announced during the presentation this morning at the Palazzo Civico: «90% of the time there won't be one», reveals Matteo Putzu of the Acs Senza Confini, who coordinates the activities. «The structure where we have always done it is not usable, the pitch in via Fara, we are waiting for answers but it is likely that it will not be done. The watchword, however, always remains that of continuity, because we believe that the carnival is a Cagliari tradition on a par with the festival of Sant'Efisio".

The program. Even without the burning of King Cancioffali, Carnival begins today in Cagliari. It starts at 5pm, with the Shrove Thursday parade in the four Historic Districts: the meeting point is in Piazza Lawrence al Bastione and will touch on Castello, Marina, Stampace and Villanova. Family Carnival on Sunday at 5.30pm, starting at 5.30pm from Piazza Garibaldi and arriving in Piazza Yenne after passing through the shopping streets.

Closing on Shrove Tuesday, the 13th, with the last ratantira which starts in the Corso, reaches Piazza Garibaldi and then returns to Piazza Yenne. But without the final fire. Followed by the Pentolaccia at the Fishing Village, moved from the Sunday following Shrove Tuesday to March 3rd (also skipping the 25th due to the coincidence with the elections). In Giorgino, starting at 6pm, there will be entertainment, group dances, street artists, the village ratantira and at 8.30pm a smaller version of the Cancioffali fire, which generally took place alongside the Cagliari one.
