A pleasure boat ran aground in Turr'e Seu, the Sinis coast, the heart of the Sinis Marine Protected Area, and started spilling hydrocarbons into the sea. Don't worry, however, it was a simple anti-pollution exercise coordinated by the Port Authority of Oristano led by Commander Federico Pucci.

This is the annual exercise called "Pollex 2023", aimed at verifying the effectiveness and efficiency of the intervention models identified by the "Local Emergency Operational Plan against marine pollution". The exercise involved the simulation of a complex intervention, which involved the first moment of rescue for a pleasure boat which triggered the emergency.

First there was the distress call from the stranded unit. The port authority's operations room immediately sent the patrol boat to assist the crew. After having rescued the unfortunate people, the crew of the patrol boat noticed that following the grounding and the consequent oil spill by the pleasure boat, a modest-sized oily slick had formed in the body of water. At that point all the operational procedures for the release of the depolluting medium were activated.

Staff from the National Research Institute also participated in the exercise and, on board the maritime vessels involved, released some buoys into the polluted body of water in order to monitor the movement of the slick in real time. Commander Pucci highlights the importance of these simulations as close as possible to a real scenario, also underlining the intention of the Maritime Department to implement every useful initiative, in terms of dialogue with other institutions, to achieve higher levels of environmental protection, exploiting those margins for improvement that still exist where it is necessary to integrate operational intervention in water bodies with effective preventive protection models of the coastal strip.
