The new Via Roma in Cagliari is a project «that starts from the Cagliari tradition of tree-lined avenues, defines a continuous, pedestrian and shaded public space that functions as a green lung and connecting element between the Station and Piazza Ingrao, between the city and the sea ».

The description is by the architect Stefano Boeri and his studio that designed the new promenade in the center of Cagliari. It is accompanied by a video showing the before and after of the intervention, which was also published on the social channels of the Stefano Boeri Architetti studio.

We do not wish to delve into the merits of the debate that the new Via Roma has generated in the city, but only to "describe the main characteristics of the project", specifies the studio's press office .

Yet the note and video defending the project come two weeks after the opening of a section of the road and the doubts expressed by Mayor Massimo Zedda . " The project didn't convince me. They talked about a forest that isn't there, a meadow that isn't there," said the mayor, also perplexed by the only two lanes reserved for private traffic .

The Boeri studio also recalls the planting of " more than 200 new trees, in addition to the maintenance of all the existing ones, and of approximately 5,700 square meters of green areas ". The project, the note continues, "contributes to significantly increasing the presence of greenery, capable of retaining fine dust and absorbing CO2 , as well as reducing the heat island effect and mitigating the microclimate".

In short, "a linear botanical garden in which to also recognize the history of the city of Cagliari, its contaminations and its cosmopolitan character. In particular, the design intervention aims to create new epicenters of collective life also in anticipation of developments in the area towards the port".
