They are the guardian angels of the beach, ready to intervene in case of need. For a few days now the Sinis Sentinels have been at work along the entire Sinis coast. They walk to check if tourists respect the ban on removing the precious quartz sand, the ban on smoking, respect for the limits defined by the dog areas, but also the ban on abandoning waste beyond the ecological islands.
The first three camps are dedicated to under 18s and are attended by children between 14 and 17 years old, young people from all over Italy and one from the Basque Country who decide to spend part of their summer holidays doing volunteer work.
This year too, the project is conceived by the Marine Protected Area which, for the third consecutive year, shakes hands with Legambiente which has included the Sinis destination among the offers of nature-themed camps.
Participants stay in the Youth Hostel in Funtana Meiga. But there is something new regarding the methods of travel: from this season the sentries move mainly by bike.
This year too, Legambiente tutor Cesare Agostini is in charge of the training and activities of the volunteers: «This year we are experimenting with a new form of education for initial training, which consists in the use of role-playing games during which simulate and interpret the most frequent situations encountered on the beach. The objective is to find new communication solutions, so as to immediately introduce the volunteer into the role of sentry and find alternative strategies to enter into synergy with those who carry out incorrect actions in a proactive manner".
As for traveling on two wheels, "bicycles allow a completely sustainable approach from the point of view of environmental protection, it is important to be the first to set a good example", adds the tutor.
«The work of the sentries is commendable – states the mayor Andrea Abis – it represents a concrete help in monitoring the kilometers of beach that are part of the Cabras territory».
