«Respect for the religious fact is positive»: this was said by the general secretary of the CEI and archbishop of Cagliari Giuseppe Baturi, in the press conference at the end of the Permanent Council, speaking about the case of the Pioltello school which decided to close on the last day of Ramadan. The decision was taken to respect the holiday of Muslim students.

This respect, Baturi continued, is typical of the Italian model because "Italian secularism does not suppress religious identity but promotes it". The archbishop, however, specified that he does not know whether in this specific case «the administrative process was respected» because in any case such decisions must be taken «within an institutional context of respect for rules and procedures. We certainly respect religious freedom, the same freedom that we ask for Christians in every part of the world", added the archbishop of Cagliari.
