A Clockwork Orange-esque scene in Sassari. Between Friday night and Saturday, an attack on a couple, a 23-year-old man and his partner, took place on Via Mercato. The attack could have had far more serious consequences.

"My son," says the father of the beaten boy, "has been in surgery since this morning to repair his jaw fracture." He also has a black eye and swelling all over. The two were surrounded by four youths who, apparently for no reason and perhaps coming from the nearby square, punched and kicked the boy, including in the head. The young man, having finished an evening with friends, was simply walking his girlfriend home.

"He told me they beat him until he passed out." The girl's screams alerted the couple's friends, who were in a nearby bar, and they immediately intervened while the attackers fled. The State Police is investigating the incident and may use surveillance cameras in the area to identify the alleged attackers. "He's very down," concludes the parent, "and we think he's been lucky." Unfortunately, in other cases, there have also been deaths or lifelong disabilities.
