The situation inside the Bancali prison has been described as "unsustainable."
The alarm was raised by the local coordination of the Uil Pa of Sassari, which reported conditions of serious hygienic degradation, overcrowding, and what it deemed inadequate management by the administration.
According to the union, the detention sections of the Sassari prison are now the scene of episodes of serious degradation and insecurity, so severe that they exceed every limit of professional and human dignity.
Among the most pressing critical issues is the management of inmates with serious psychiatric illnesses. In particular, incidents deemed "unacceptable" have been documented, including behavior that endangers the health and safety of other inmates and staff, with consequences for hygiene and sanitation.
The UIL PA (Italian Union of Workers' Unions) reports workplaces compromised by foul odors and a high health risk, despite numerous reports and interventions by the Penitentiary Police. To date, however, no concrete changes have been reported.
Further worsening the situation is reportedly growing overcrowding. The Sassari prison , union representatives explain, is reportedly paying the price for transfers of inmates from other facilities, particularly from Rome's Regina Coeli prison and, more recently, from Nuoro prison. This trend has led to overcrowding levels considered unsustainable, without a corresponding increase in resources, space, or staff.
The union is also targeting the lack of a permanent director, a factor which, according to UIL PA, generates chronic management instability .
Added to this are difficulties in union relations with the current management, accused of maintaining a closed attitude that makes constructive dialogue to improve the agents' working conditions impossible.
Penitentiary Police officers, the statement concludes, are reportedly working in a climate of intense stress and demotivation, feeling left alone to deal with an increasingly complex situation. For this reason, the union is calling for immediate intervention from higher levels and the competent authorities.
