Pig farming in Caniga, in the municipality of Sassari, has been halted. The closure follows investigations conducted by the Metropolitan City based on documentation submitted by the One-Stop Shop for Productive and Economic Activities. The new body has proposed a ban on the operation and a complete ban on atmospheric emissions.

Thus, the Municipality self-repealed the Single Authorization Declaration, declaring it inadmissible to the interested parties. Essentially, they were told not to carry out the work, which did not qualify for a permit, and asked to remove the changes made.

The two Duas, almost identical in content, had been presented in October by two different economic entities who wanted to start a pig farm in the village.

And now they will have to stop following the findings of the Environment Department of Piazza d'Italia. The Department, called upon to carry out its own audits regarding atmospheric emissions, had asked the project's owners to clarify certain statements in the DUA, according to which the proposed activity is not intensive, does not involve wastewater discharge, does not require noise impact documentation, and does not require the acquisition of environmental permits.

For the offices, the requests were not drafted exhaustively with respect to some items in the emissions chapter, while regarding the distance from the nearest homes, at least half a kilometer is mentioned when the plant is no more than 250 meters from some homes.

The breeding of approximately 1,500 pigs had sparked much controversy in the city, to which the farm managers themselves responded. The controversy is sure to continue.
