Protests against the intensive pig farm in Caniga continue in Sassari . Another demonstration took place yesterday in Piazza d'Italia, also attended by "The Elephant in the Room," the civic committee recently founded by residents of the village.

"We want the Municipality to protect us," says President Fabio Porcu. "They must change the implementation rules. We find that facility unhealthy." Pigs are inside the facility, apparently over a thousand head, and the consequences are already beginning to be felt. "First of all, the unpleasant odors and then the wild boars, attracted by the pigs, are moving the earth everywhere." But what is most worrying are the potential critical issues. "We know," continues Vice President Pier Giuseppe Madau, "that each piglet consumes seven liters of water a day. How much water will be spent for 2,000 animals?" There are fears that the facility will drain all the area's water resources, which currently rely on wells, leaving families without water .

Another problem highlighted by the committee is the constant travel of trucks in and out of the farm. "That road," they report, "is designed for much lighter loads, and we believe those articulated trucks weigh more." In addition to soil and groundwater pollution, a problem they fear could materialize sooner or later, the committee laments another factor. "We made a significant investment in our homes," they conclude, "paying off mortgages for 20 years, and now, with this factory just a few meters away, our homes are worth nothing ."
