Amundsen Square, also known as "Piazza dei Caduti" (of the Fallen), in the Latte Dolce neighborhood of Sassari, is a widening of the square, dotted with dips and potholes where pedestrians fall as if into a trap. They fall to the ground, suffering sprains and dislocations, or worse.
To address this critical issue, a signature drive was held in the square between Tuesday and Wednesday by the New Committee of Latte Dolce and Santa Maria di Pisa.
"We received over 150 signatures," reports Danilo Farina, president of the Committee. "We weren't expecting it, a sign that the issue is deeply felt." Among the signatories were citizens from other neighborhoods, as well as residents who have ironically labeled the square "Piazza dei Caduti" (Piazza of the Fallen). The Municipality is currently studying the requested redevelopment, which, using the revolving fund, is developing €44 million in projects, as announced last summer. Meanwhile, residents are proposing naming the future square after one of Sassari's cultural icons, singer-songwriter Giovannino Giordo, a figure who has long been struggling to find a place in the city's toponymy.
