Increasing births , in 2022 , in Sassari : this is confirmed by the data from the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic of the university hospital.

In fact, in the year that has just ended, 1,328 children were born into the world in the structure on the third floor of the maternal-child building: 11 more than in 2021 . And the boys beat the girls : there are 704 "blue bows" against 624 "pink bows".

At an altitude of 729 spontaneous births while caesareans were 545 . There are also 19 twin births and 1 triplet birth.

«The increase in births bodes well - explains Professor Giampiero Capobianco , director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic - and the structure, part of a high-intensity hub, confirms itself as a reference center for Northern Sardinia, also given the presence of Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care".

«We hope that the growth in deliveries can be a change of course - continues Capobianco - especially on an island where the rate of denatality is high. It is hoped that more and more Sardinians will be able to decide to have a child , especially at a young age, because this facilitates uncomplicated pregnancies ».

The newborns, however, are not only Sardinians. " Foreigners also bring the number of births up - comments Capobianco again - and Sassari confirms itself, once again, as a multi-ethnic city".

The births of foreigners show a growing trend : they were 95 in 2020, 120 in 2021 and 130 in 2022.

In first place, also in 2022, newborns of Nigerian nationality (24), followed by those of Senegalese (14), Romanian (13), Moroccan (11), Chinese (7), Brazilian (6), German ( 4), Pakistani (4) and Colombian (4). Then follow the children born to Belarusian (3), Russian (3), Polish (3), Belgian (3) and Ukrainian (3) mothers. And then the children born to French (2), Albanian (2), Spanish (2), Filipina (2), Slovak (2) and Malagasy (2) mothers. 1 birth is given to women arriving from Thailand, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Venezuela, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Sri Lanka, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, the Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

Furthermore, for the director of the historic clinic in Viale San Pietro, there are two other data that highlight the high level of the professionals of the Aou of Sassari. «We had 73 births from mothers positive for Covid (in 2021 there were 25) – he says – and no complications were recorded for either the mothers or the newborns. This is a high number that demonstrates that Covid is still present ».

Since 2020, the structure has been the only birth point and Covid ward in central-northern Sardinia.

«To these data – comments Professor Capobianco again – we must add those of deliveries in analgesia which in 2022 were 266 . An important fact that highlights how, despite the difficulties due to the shortages of the anesthesiologists, we have been able to have dedicated specialists who have believed a lot in this birth process".

«Thanks go to our general management and to the rector – she concludes – who have shown themselves to be very sensitive to the needs of expectant mothers and women in general».
