Good news for Sassari Healthcare: a new radiotherapy machine will arrive within the year.

The news was leaked during an update course held at the Grazia Deledda hotel entitled: "Radiotherapy, safety, diagnostics and treatment".

Fourth refresher course of 2023, organized by the Order of surgeons and dentists of the province of Sassari, which emphasized the danger of exposure to ionizing radiation for patients and medical operators . The meeting was opened by the president of the Order of Doctors of the province of Sassari, Nicola Addis, who recalled "the obligation to include among the training credits those of the courses which have radiotherapy as their theme".

And laws were discussed during the morning update, as Legislative Decree 101 of 2020 provides for a series of behavioral rules for healthcare professionals with the aim of optimizing medical exposures, avoiding unnecessary ones.

In fact, Luca Simbula stated in his report "that the law provides for arrest, up to 3 months' imprisonment , for examinations involving unjustified exposures, or in less serious cases, a fine".

Then followed the intervention of Paola Crivelli, focused on complementary radiological activities in dentistry , who suggested «a limited use of live images on the patient, preferring instead a diagnostic activity on recorded images». Aldo Pischedda reported on the interventional activity in cardiology, highlighting "that for the dosage it is necessary to take into account the patient's body mass, gender and the resolution of the images in the most complex cases".

Also hoping for «the removal from the operating room of subjects who are not indispensable at the time of radiation or in any case the greatest possible distance from the source and therefore from the patient. With proper use of protective devices.
"The introduction of the new law - Piergiorgio Marini reported - entails greater burdens for operators, who are obliged to document the doses irradiated to patients". Dalila di Mario illustrated «the importance of reducing the exposure of healthy tissues to ionizing doses in therapies, to limit the toxicity of radiation treatment».
«The 2020 legislation obliges healthcare workers to work in synergy - said Franco Pinna in his report -. Therefore, teamwork between the various structures and specializations in all medical fields is important».

The good news on the arrival of a new generation radiotherapy machine in the Aou of Sassari was instead announced by Angela Poggiu, a medical physics specialist, who reported «how the most advanced radiotherapy technology can reduce the doses administered, with result of obtaining safer environments for all. Safety also extends outside the hospital environment". In fact, Angela Spanu in her speech highlighted "that the treated patients remain radioactive for variable times, but during which they must take particular precautions against minors and pregnant women".
