A woman living in the Nurra district of Sassari was hit with a monstrous Abbanoa bill . She owed nearly €113,000 for an estimated consumption of 34 million liters of water in the 2014 quarter, a figure well above the €200,000 annual consumption of the average Italian family.
The woman's lawyer, Giuseppe Murineddu, emphasizes that the calculation was the result of a clear error , especially since it was a domestic user. Furthermore, he says, the incident is also burdened by the fact that, once the anomalies were discovered and the supply was terminated, the company took the meter away without involving the user .
Abbanoa rejected the settlement offer, claiming that the amount was based on actual readings, and the only option was to end up in court. In court in Sassari, after consulting with an expert, the judge concluded that there was no evidence of the meter's proper functioning, deeming the measurement "abnormal." For this reason, he argued that the consumption, totaling €113,000, had not been proven by Abbanoa. Therefore, the amount was not paid.
