They read little, do not go to exhibitions or theatres, do little physical activity, and often drop out of school .
This is a snapshot of Sardinian adolescents taken by Save the Children, which released the Atlas of Childhood at Risk in Italy.
In Sardinia, half of children read books outside of school, a figure below the Italian average of 53.8%. Forty-three percent have visited exhibitions or museums, compared to the national average of 50.1%, and 42.3% have visited archaeological sites (compared to the national average of 40.2%). Only 27% have gone to the theater and 39.3% to a concert, compared to the national average of 33.2% and 33.3%. 23.4% do not engage in any physical activity (the Italian average is 18.1%).
Many adolescents on the island are only children: 38.8%, over 10% higher than the national average. And the school dropout rate (15.9%) is the second highest in Italy .
Sardinian percentages are also very high for early school leavers (18-24 year olds who have dropped out of school or vocational training), at 14.5%.
